Aulus Vitellius, born in A.D. 14, fostered close friendships with emperors spanning from Tiberius to Nero. His illustrious career included notable roles such as the proconsulship of Africa. In A.D. 69, Vitellius ascended to power as his troops proclaimed him emperor, triumphing over Otho's forces in Northern Italy.

However, Vitellius's reign was marred by his excessive indulgence in lavish feasts, diverting his focus from the affairs of state. When Vespasian was declared emperor in Alexandria on July 1st, the Danubian legions switched their allegiance, initiating an invasion of Italy. The ensuing conflict saw Vitellius defeated, culminating in his capture, and tragic demise. Rome witnessed the spectacle of his body being dragged through the streets before being discarded into the Tiber River.

Vitellius would be the last of "the year of the four Emperors" as Vespasian would rule for the next 10 years. The years 68/69 were a tumultuous time in Roman History kicked off by Nero's Sudden Suicide.
