The Byzantine empire was essentially the remnants of the eastern Roman empire after its collapse. Upon the coronation of Justin II, he would inherit a massive kingdom that was overextended and owed tributes to many of its neighbours to ensure peace. Justin II would abandon these tributes, which would provoke his allies to declare war on his empire and much of his territory would be conquered in the aftermath. The Lombards would conquer much of the remaining Roman territory of Italy. Justin II reportedly would have regular fits of insanity in which he would behave like a wild animal and demand organ music be played constantly. His wife Sofia would occasionally enact diplomacy on his behalf.
