Nero, also known as Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, was Roman emperor from 54 to 68 AD. He ascended the throne after being adopted by Claudius and guided by Seneca and his mother Agrippina. However, Nero eventually broke free, murdering his mother and ruling with increasing tyranny.

Initially popular for respecting the Senate and avoiding excessive interference, Nero's reign saw challenges including Boudicca's revolt, unemployment, and public dissatisfaction with his lavish lifestyle. He was suspected of ordering the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD and persecuted Christians as scapegoats.

As his rule declined, Nero's actions grew more despotic. He killed his wife and her successor, forced Seneca to commit suicide, and executed critical senators. Revolts in Gaul and Spain further weakened his hold on power.

Nero's public performances and erratic behavior earned him a reputation as mentally unstable. Condemned by the Senate, he chose suicide over execution, ending his tumultuous reign. This would only lead to more uncertainty in Roman leadership and the beginning of the time of what is known to history as "the Year of the Four Emperors" from 68/69 AD.
