The very first coin in the Twelve Caesars and the original Caesar, Julius Caesar. Born in 100 BC he was Rome's most famous military tactician, statesman and Dictator. He would spend almost a decade campaigning in western Europe to expand the influence of the Roman Empire. Julius Caesar would hold sway and power most commonly seen by those of higher status, this would make his predecessor Pompey, highly suspicious and he would try to have Caesar relinquish his command of Rome's armed forces. This would lead to the Roman civil war in which Caesar would eventually defeat Pompey after he fled Italy. It was not until he defeated the entire Pompeian party and its detractors that he was able to return to Rome as its undisputed master. Julius Caesar was declared Dictator for life by the roman people in 49 BC

Obverse: Laureate Head of Julius Caesar, Lituus and simpulum behind

Reverse: Venus Victrix standing, holding Victory on right hand and sceptre in left hand, arm resting on shield set on globe
