This coin features a double portrait of two of Romes famous Emperors, on the obverse there is a portrait of Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus or "Caligula" as he was most commonly known. He was famous for his sadism and cruelty which most often conjures the image of him as a tyrant. The first six months of his rule were said to have been noble and peaceful, it would then fall deeply into depravity, which is what he is remembered for most often. There would be multiple attempts on Caligula's life, eventually, a group of his own Praetorian guard would succeed in his assassination in AD 41.
This coin was produced during Caligula's reign but also features an effigy of one of the most famous Roman Emperors on the reverse, Augustus, thus making this coin rare and highly sought after for collectors.
Obverse: Bare head portrait of Caligula
Reverse: Divius Augustus with stars
