Product Description:

an important first year predecimal coin and the only Threepence with a portrait of King Edward VII.

In 1908, the British government enacted The Commonwealth Coinage Act, granting Australia the authority to introduce a currency with denominations similar to the British Imperial system. In 1910, Australia received its inaugural shipment of these coins aboard the British ship RMS Otranto. Notably, the first batch featured a portrait of King Edward VII, although he did not live to witness their production. Subsequent shipments showcased the effigy of his successor, King George V.

The production of the Threepence occurred in the United Kingdom from 1910 to 1914. Production began in Australia at the Melbourne Mint in 1916, extending until the advent of decimalization in 1966. This timeframe positions these coins as a crucial component of pre-decimal coinage, marking a significant era in Australia's monetary history.
