When he became the Czar the nation with the world’s largest land mass, his cousins in the western European nations such as England and France were far ahead technologically and socially. As such, Alexander II would go against Russian precedent of the time and enact major Liberal reforms in his nation to put his country further in step with the rest of Liberal Europe. Doing so would cause great stress on a relatively uneducated populace that was weary of such changes. An attempt on his life was made in 1866 which would only strengthen his resolve to this cause.
He would be known for his emancipation act of 1861 and abolishing corporal punishment he would also be the Czar who would sell the territory of Alaska to the USA in 1876. He would drastically increase his kingdoms rail network which would greatly improve the life of the somewhat feudal society and economic security. Although not all would be so please with his Westernising endeavours and he would be assassinated in 1881 by the terrorist organisation “Peoples Will”.
