Chinese New Year is the longest and most important holiday in the Chinese Lunar calendar.
According to Chinese mythology, the order and selection of the animals in the zodiac calendar was originally decided by a race organized by the Jade Emperor. The race was a challenging one with the main obstacle being crossing a turbulent river.
One of the animals to participate in the race was the rat. The rat was very cunning and to ensure he would be the winner, he made plans to cross the river by riding on the ox’s back, then jump off just before the finish line in first place. The rat’s plan worked, and he finished first followed by the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and finally, the pig. The order in which the animals finished the race determined their order in the zodiac calendar.
Each year, various mints and refiners celebrate the Lunar New Year by releasing bullion coins featuring lunar animal designs. Each lunar zodiac animal is said to influence the personality and fortune of the people born under its year.
At KJC we currently stock lunar coins from The Perth Mint and PAMP Suisse. The coins range in size from 1/20oz, 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz, 1oz, 2oz, 10oz and 1 kilo. All coins are struck from 99.99% pure gold.
