This "ban liang" coins were first cast during the Qin Dynasty around 200BCE.

The Snake is significant in traditional Chinese culture as one of 12 animals that participated in the Emperor's Great Race, held to determine the order of their appearance in the lunar calendar. A dominant creature said to control nature, the Snake finished sixth year in the 12-year lunar cycle - including 1953,1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, and 2025. The left-hand coin depicts a dramatic purple and red coloured Snake. <the Snake sits entwined in a tree watching over the river bridge.
