Sydney Mint Type II
Browse our full range of Sydney Mint Type Two sovereigns here.
These Sovereigns feature a young bust of Queen Victoria with her hair tied with banksia wreath. Produced from 1857 to 1870 they have the Type 2 design on the reverse design stating “Sydney Mint” and “One Sovereign”.
These coins were one of the first mass produced sovereigns in Australia and were only produced at the Sydney mint. Earlier dates of this coin are extremely rare to find in good condition particularly those pre-1864. The Type 1 and 2 coins are the only gold sovereigns that have “AUSTRALIA” inscribed on them making them the definition of Australian sovereigns. These coins are the first and last time the Royal Mint allowed one of its colonies to produce a different design on the reverse of a Sovereign coin.
