The Sydney Mint Type 1 Half Sovereign was produced from 1855 to 1856 and is the first half sovereign to be produced in Australia. These uniquely Australian sovereigns used silver rather than copper to harden the gold giving them an already superior intrinsic value over their British counterparts. The 1855 variety is believed to have only 55 to 60 examples surviving of the 21 000 produced. The 1856 is a slightly more common example as it was known as a rarity for much of its life with a mintage of around 478 000.
