Established on June 20, 1899, The Perth Mint is Australia’s largest official bullion mint and was originally responsible for producing the currency used in Australia and the British Empire between 1899 and 1931. Today, The Perth Mint refines a number of bullion products including minted and cast gold bars available in a variety of sizes from 1 gram to 1 kilo. Backed by the Government of Western Australia, all Perth Mint Gold Bullion bars are stamped with The Perth Mint’s Logo (a swan imprint), gold weight and purity. The Perth Mint is one of the world's largest gold refiners and is an LBMA Good Delivery brand.
Nestled in the picturesque city of Perth, Australia stands the renowned Perth Mint—an influential institution with a captivating history deeply rooted in gold and silver refinement. Established in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint, this iconic facility played a pivotal role in Australia's economic landscape.
From its inception until 1931, the Perth Mint struck an impressive 106 million gold sovereigns and nearly 735,000 half sovereigns, circulating not only within Australia but also throughout the vast British Empire. Post-1931, a significant shift occurred as the Mint transitioned from minting gold sovereigns, coinciding with Britain's departure from the gold standard, to focusing on the production of fine gold bullion bars.
The Perth Mint reached a historic milestone in 1957 when Refinery Officer Leo Hickey and Senior Craftsman Alexander Osborne achieved what is deemed "arguably the purest of all gold." This feat resulted in a proof 'plate' boasting an extraordinary purity of almost six nines (999.999) parts of gold per thousand.
Continuing its legacy, the Perth Mint has evolved with the times, investing in a state-of-the-art refinery and manufacturing facility. Notably, in 2012, the Mint secured a Guinness World Record for crafting the Largest Coin—an astounding 99.99% gold behemoth weighing 2,231 pounds.
Today, the Perth Mint stands as a beacon of excellence, capturing the essence of Australia's rich heritage through meticulously designed pieces showcasing unique Australian flora, fauna, and indigenous culture. Each creation is a testament to the Mint's commitment to celebrating and preserving Australia's extraordinary legacy in the world of precious metals.
